About Lož Valley Landscape Park

Lož Valley Landscape Park, located in the Inner Carniola region of southwestern Slovenia, covers a strikingly diverse karst terrain characterized by valleys, plateaus, caves, and traditional villages. The park stretches between the Ilirska Bistrica and Lož basins, encompassing a mixture of forested hills, meadows, and wetland areas, all interwoven with traditional agricultural land and historical sites. Notable geographic features include the Lož Karst Field and surrounding limestone ridges, which contribute to a rich subterranean landscape featuring numerous caves and sinkholes typical of the Dinaric Karst region. Ecologically, the park is home to mixed deciduous forests with species such as beech, oak, and hornbeam, alongside rich biodiversity ranging from deer and foxes to numerous bird species including owls and woodpeckers. Historically, the area harbors remnants of medieval hilltop castles and archaeological sites, reflecting its long-standing human presence. Visitors can explore well-maintained hiking and cycling trails that connect charming rural settlements, panoramic viewpoints, and natural monuments. The park also promotes the preservation of traditional farming practices and local heritage, blending natural beauty with cultural experiences. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, birdwatching, caving, and mountain biking amidst the peaceful natural setting. Seasonal festivals and local farms add a cultural dimension to visits, making Lož Valley Landscape Park a balanced destination for nature lovers and those interested in Slovenia’s regional history and landscape conservation efforts.
